Born in Newmarket, on 7th June 1894 [Newmarket Q3-1894 4B:487] to Joseph Henry and Elizabeth Caroline TROUGHTON (née SANDERSON), of Victoria House, Exning Road, Newmarket. 1901 census...Joseph[ 6] was at Victoria House, Exning Road, Newmarket with his father Joseph Henry TROUGHTON, [37] engineer, Manager of Gas Works, born Bridlington; his mother Elzabeth C [37] born Dublin; brothers Frederick C [8] and William H [2]; sister Ida R [5]. All the children were born in Newmarket. 1911 census...Aged 16, he was a boarder at Framlingham.His parents were still at Victoria House, Exning Road, with his sister Ida Rosalie. At Framlingham he was a sub prefect, member of 1910 football XI and won the Waugh Cup for boxing in 1910. That year he was also awarded the Royal Humane Society vellum testimonial for saving a life from drowning. On 17t December 1918 in St Saviour, Paddington, he married Ada Helen WING of Maida Vale, London. |

He served in the West Riding Regiment in Gallipoli, Egypt and on the Western Front. He was wounded at Messines in 1917 and was awarded the Military Cross on January 1st 1918 for distinguished conduct in the field.
His wounds led to admission to Mundesley Sanitorium (on the Norfolk coast), where he died on 9th August 1922, and was brought home to Newmarket for burial. The CWGC effective dates are 5th August 1914 to 31st December 1921, therefore he is not recorded by them. |
